Our Story

Lingua Terra Tile and Terra Home is a family run business built by people with a love of great design, a passion for fine craft, and a commitment to healthy and sustainable industry. Our business was born four years ago in a tiny rose-covered cottage. We are now housed in a sunny 1000 square foot hand built post-and beam studio on four acres of meadow, garden, and woodland. This pristine property nestles in the heart of Denman Island, one of British Columbia’s jewel-like Gulf Islands, home to gorgeous mountain and ocean views, lush rain forest, and a vibrant community of artists and entrepreneurs.

Founder Bronwyn Simons was a practicing artist and designer for many years before launching Terra Home. During years of travel, Bronwyn has filled sketchbooks with the visual detail and colour that she loves. From Renaissance stonework in a Florentine palazzo to wild lotuses on a lake in the far North, details are lovingly observed and carefully recorded. This collected and cherished beauty from around the world becomes the foundation for Terra Home’s themed tile collections. Every design pays tribute to an inspiring work of art or nature, and conveys a strong sense of place and the passionate inspiration of the artist.

Our hands on manufacturing process is based on centuries old tile making traditions. A few innovations such as an electronic kiln assure consistency and relative speed, while retaining the individuality and subtle variation that make artisanal tile so special. Terra Home is founded on the idea that art can be woven into the fabric of our daily lives. We envision homes that nurture a sense of peace, well being, and beauty for all who enter them, and we envision our tiles becoming part of those homes.
